Potassium Chlorate: A Vastly Used Chemical by chris cornell
There are many compounds and salts that have been vastly used in all fields. It is a white crystalline salt which is used extensively in manufacturing industries and even commercial, school and research laboratories. It is used as an oxidizing agent, to make fireworks, safety matches and explosives, etc. Even today it is continually used though in a limit in these industries though other substances are replacing it slowly. It is manufactured using the method of electrolysis where sodium chloride is used as the main ingredient for it.
Its unique property of exploding spontaneously has made it the much sought after agent in the explosive industry and fireworks industry. The fireworks are of many kinds and most of them use this chemical to produce sparkles and the explosive sounds. With sulfuric acid it will ignite producing a good amount of heat. Another application is in the manufacturing of oxygen gas in laboratories. Oxygen gas is required in hospitals, in research work and for the oxidation of substances in laboratories and other places. Chlorate candles are made using this chemical which is being used in the spacecrafts and under water crafts to being the sole supplier of oxygen to these.
It is found that the efficiency of the propellants that are chlorate based is more than the ones that used gun powder so this traditional method has been replaced by the novel method. In any industry efficiency in work will help save energy and money. Thus the profit margin will be high. Do switching to the modern methods is prudent.
Potassium chlorate is a highly reacting substance and therefore handling of it should be done with care. It should be stored in a safe place where it cannot come in contact with combustible substances. Most accidents that are caused in such places are caused because of the mishandling of this chemical or deploying an unsafe mode to store it. Thus it is found until now it is a cheaply produced chemical that has vast uses.
