Math help?!?! Plz I really need help with this one problem ?

Mike is making gift baskets. Each basket will contain three different kinds of candels: tapers, pillars and jar candles. Taper’s cost $1 each, pillars cost $4 each, and jar candles cost $6 each. Mike puts 8 candles costing a total of $24 in each basket, and he includes as many tapers as pillars and jar candles combined. How many tapers are in a basket? Thanks 10 points best answer

Let the number of tapers be t.
Let the number of pillars be p.
Let the number of jar be j.
1st equation is t + p + j = 8 (1st half of 4th sentence)
2nd equation t + 4p + 6j = 24 (3rd sentence and 2nd half of 4th sentence)
3rd equation t = p + j (2nd part of 4th sentence)

Substitute the 3rd equation which gives the value of t into the 1st equation.
p + j + p + j = 8

Collect like terms
2p + 2j = 8

Factorise
2(p + j) = 8

Divide both sides by 2.
p + j = 4

Substitute the value of p + j we just found into the 3rd equation
t = p + j
t = 4

There are 4 tapers in a basket.
